Staying Cool

The Slip-N-Slide has its place along side Mr. Potato Head, Slinky, the Hula Hoop, Barbie and the Radio Flyer Wagon as classic toys that every child should experience at least once. I remember a summer in the late 70's when I enjoyed running and jumping on my cousin's S-N-S during a family visit to Florida. Of course there always comes a time when someone will slide over a stick or rock (or piece of petrified dog poo) resulting in a scratch that can only be healed by a band aid, a popsicle and a kiss from mom. I think my cousin Hope was the unlucky one who received the boo boo that day. She healed just fine I hear and has managed to continue with her life despite her injury. She always was the strong one.

With the super high temperatures recently we decided to buy River a Slip-N-Slide all her own. She managed to make it through the afternoon without a scratch. As you can see below, she and Daisy had a very good time.

River has been dying to splash around in her wading pool for days now. So much so that she talked us into bringing it in the house so she could sit in it without any water. I think this was just a ploy to make us feel sorry for her.

Driving Miss Daisy

We picked up our puppy yesterday. After a long trip (a tank of gas and a gallon of washer fluid) through what could be scenic bi ways in Amish Country we arrived at our puppies first home. It was overcast with drizzle and snow flurries all day but as far as River was concerned it was a beautiful day. As soon as she walked through the door, her puppy attacked her with slobbery kisses. It looked like something from a Hallmark Commercial. Instant friendship.

The trip home seemed much quicker which was good since our new puppy apparently gets car sick. She barfed in her cage. Luckily, Beverly (the breeder) had the forethought to not feed her before the trip so it wasn't a big problem.

Once home, the two little girls played all evening. This looks like the start of a beautiful friendship.

Name That Dog

We pick our puppy up a week from today. She is a 4 1/2 month old pure bred Cairn Terrier who has yet to be named. So far she has simply been known as "Female #3". Naturally, since she is to be River's puppy, we decided to let River name her. Her idea was to name her "Fifi" after a toy stuffed dog that she already owns. Nope. I just can't hear myself calling for a "Fifi" - time for a Plan B.. except there is no Plan B.

I am completely stumped. This is the same breed as Dorothy's dog "Toto" from The Wizard of Oz but we can't name her "Toto". Not only does that sound like a boy's name but I would imagine about half of all Cairn Terriers go by that name.

Love that mischievous sideways glance. She and River will be a formidable duo.

Christmas Day 2009

Another great Christmas has come and gone. This year saw River begin to enjoy more and more of the traditions and customs even if she doesn't quite understand them. Santa ceased to be a big scary guy in red and, as it turns out, is actually a pretty nice guy. So nice that River was happy to share her special mint Oreo cookies.. and River never shares her mint Oreo cookies!
